Interactive: asking real questions. I already know what I think, and I want to know what my students think.

Film, video, music, print.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
For me? I read what students have to say and help them strategize ways to say it better. For them? The multimedia presentation.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
I don not grade students. I grade their work.
What kind of student would love your class?
Someone who can deal with a casual but rigorous approach, and be able to roll with changes that I make in response to what is happening in class.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Come to class: we need you. Develop different kinds of reading and writing strategies: it is all about context.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
I know medieval romances best. As a lit teacher, I know a lot about narratives. As a writing teacher, I have read @ 10,000 student essays: I know what works.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Non-academic? My garden. Tomatoes, especially. Academic? I have a wide network of colleagues and friends in literary studies around the world.

Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
The unexamined life is not worth living.
