What is your style of teaching?
I write with my students in class, using writing to solve problems, to discover what I need to know, and to figure things out.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
I use slides, projector, blackboard, handouts generated from class questions (no "canned" media).
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
The most engaging is the final portfolio where students rewrite work they have already begun--and received feedback for--in class and in private conferences.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
I look first to see if students have successfully completed the B Contract, based entirely on finishing tasks. Grades above B are based on writing excellence.
What kind of student would love your class?
One who does what the weak student does not do.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Work hard and keep checking in with me. I am available to you.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
Rhetoric and composition; learning
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
The Graham Chair I was awarded last year.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
Extreme grilling! Movies! Apple devices!
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
Keep the lines of communication open between us. I certainly pledge to do my part.
