What is your style of teaching?
With the exception of my project-based data management course, all of my classes are discussion oriented where I engage students in exploring the subject.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Mostly, I use my own materials including: case studies based on my own work in the field, research articles, and team-based and classroom exercises or projects.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
Using my own tool, I have each student explore how information and systems are used within the company where they work to transact, manage, and innovate.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Meeting the requirements of the assignments, thoroughness, care for detail, intellectual rigor and honesty, and out-of-the-box thinking.
What kind of student would love your class?
Students that question, who come with open minds and a hunger for knowledge but who are also practical and goal driven towards learning in preparation for life.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Do not live inside a predefined box. Take advantage of your college years to explore the possibilities and to challenge yourselves. Take risks; learn by doing.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
All aspects of information resource management in the enterprise; especially decision support and knowledge management systems.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Raising two outstanding sons who have going way beyond their Dad as good citizens and loving members of the community.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I am an active musician (trombone and euphonium) who performs in various ensembles and who gives solo recitals. I am also active in volunteer work.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
I respect a good effort but focus on results. I provide a real-world experience in the classroom/online to prepare the student for his/her future work life.
