What is your style of teaching?
Most classes are a mixture of lecture and in-class hands on activities. Questions from the students are highly encouraged, as well as group discussions.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Bulleted PowerPoints aid in-class note taking and are also made available online. My exclusive interviews with industry professionals are also shown in class.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
Final projects in Music Ind. II, Music Supervision and Songwriting are combined in a real-world real-time process to find/license/place songs to picture.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Detailed completion of the assignment and evidence that the material has been truly absorbed, not just memorized. Team projects require self/peer evaluations.
What kind of student would love your class?
A student who is open to taking part in discussions, working on teams and is self-motivated would do well in my classes. Passion for the subject is critical.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Hard work and patience will pay off in dividends. The music industry will welcome and support those that learn their craft and also bring positive energy.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
Live performance, use of songs in Film/Television, licensing, publishing, composition, negotiation, contracts, post production, team building.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Featured piano soloist for Clint Eastwood's film Mystic River with The Boston Symphony Orchestra. Other career highlights can be found @
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
Every day is different. I write and perform with The Boston Pops, my music is constantly placed in TV/Film, I arrange and perform on many artist's projects.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
I create an open and friendly atmosphere, but absolutely demand high quality results when it comes time for the student to show what they have learned.
