What is your style of teaching?
I favor the Socratic method, having students think through questions that should be reasonable to them, and find the answers by virtue of that thinking.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
books , many handouts, pdfs on screen and websites with relevancy.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
For AWD, the research paper requires the most intense work, but the genre unit that follows is the most fun. In the genre unit, we appeal to the public.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
The willingness to revise early material, an effort to demonstrate that all the feedback they were given was used to better their paper.
What kind of student would love your class?
Students who are comfortable in workshop settings and aren't afraid to be visible or vocal (but no one is left out who might be shy).
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Bring all your energy to class. Look for the relevant and ask for what you need, in class, in faculty office hours, in email. Ask and you shall receive.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
co-authoring a best selling career book.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
Yes. Ask me privately. Life is endlessly interesting.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
Prepare to laugh. Life is absurd and laughter helps us all to live healthier, better lives. No reason an English class cannot be like that as well.
