What is your style of teaching?
I encourage students to take an active role in cultivating their eduction. I have very high standards, but support students to meet them.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
I teach with books and accessible slide show presentations. In my view, a classroom does not have to be a multimedia show to be interesting and engaging.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
A classroom debate. Students were assigned to the team that was arguing the opposite of their personal beliefs.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Did the student master the material? Did the student work hard? Did the student take ownership of the learning process?
What kind of student would love your class?
Motivated. Hard working. Tenacious. Not afraid of making a mistake. Takes responsibility for his or her education.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Treat your deeply held beliefs like hypotheses and test them. An education is a privilege (not a right), and you should give it 120% of your effort.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
The science of emotion.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Testimony before the Subcommittee on Research and Science Education, Committee on Science and Technology, US House of Representatives, 2008.
