What is your style of teaching?
Online: interactive activities and assignments. In class: lecture, discussion, multimedia, group activities
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Just about everything! Powerpoint, short videos, activity materials. I don't give students PPT slides--I want them to be active in class and in notetaking.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
That depends on the student. I want students to apply information to their own lives or lives of their friends, and I design assignments so they can do that.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
When grading students' work, I mainly look for accuracy. I use a rubric for writing assignments so students know what I will focus on in grading. No surprises!
What kind of student would love your class?
One who comes to class having thought deeply about the assignments, who asks thoughtful questions, and tries to apply the material to his/her own experiences.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Learning takes effort. Having to work hard to understand something doesn't mean you're dumb. You are smart enough to get into college--you CAN do this!
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
My specialty area is clinical psychology (mental disorders
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Next to raising my son, I'm proudest of the achievements of my students. Some are now Ph.D. psychologists, others are successful in business and non-profits.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I have a half-time appointment as an Assistant VP for Regional Affairs and University Academic Planning. I also do research on student success.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
The accelerated hybrid courses are a lot of work. I try to make them interesting, but they go fast and there's a lot of homework. So be prepared!
