What is your style of teaching?
Highly interactive/creative style. I like students to participate and show leadership and camaraderie. We write together at almost every class. I do experiment.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Research finding tools, from Google to scholarly databases. Multimedia (video, DVD, music) as these can stimulate the imagination. I customize assignments.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
Interviews, field observations and traditional research are interwoven in some classes; then, students share findings, and we learn from one another.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Originality while following instructions. Evidence of meaningful revision. Insight as well as solid content. Flair in style plus clear expression.
What kind of student would love your class?
The ideal student in my class is one who listens, speaks, respects the individuality of each classmate and me, and understands that we are there to collaborate.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Your writing follows you everywhere; work on it.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
Writing processes, from prewriting through revision and completion.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
I edited a videotape without formal training, condensing 4 hrs of documentary into 41 minutes and writing a script around it to promote arts' collaboration.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I write a column for the free, online daily www.insidehighered.com called "A Kinder Campus." I am a business writer also and am working on two books.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
I have a gentle persona with a sense of humor and genuinely care about each student's writing, well-being and growth.
