What is your style of teaching?
Interactive, experiential. I help students discover and learn on their own.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Internet, books, newspapers, magazines.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
Pair with a photojournalist and go find stories in a city we are visiting--San Francisco, Washington,DC,Santa Fe. Interview,write,produce a package.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Excellent writing, clear, succinct story telling. Applying all aspects of AP Style and superior stories that show rather than tell.
What kind of student would love your class?
Creative, independent, bright, self motivated.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Be curious.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
Writing and crisis communications
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Beginning a new career at an advanced age.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
Travel writing and photography.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
I am rigorous, but fair. A student must work very hard to earn an A, but they will be marketable if they hone their skills.
