What is your style of teaching?
Conversational, exploratory, student driven.I want to give students the basics and let them work out how they relate to their own interests.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Required course texts, relevant web sites and new media, cultural productions: film, popular music, advertising.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
Rhetorical analysis of a corporate website looking at what narratives are offered and how companies construct strong identity and place using technical writing.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Engaging writing. It needs to answer the question in an organized and well supported way. Commit to it, revise it and get excited about it!
What kind of student would love your class?
One who is not afraid to use her imagination and get excited about her own ideas. Students who are motivated by improvement, not just a grade will love it.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
GO TO CLASS! Find something to get connected to and to get excited about in every class. It is your life and education. Make it as meaningful as you can.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
Breaking down and teaching specialized tasks that students need for writing at the university level. I also know a lot about TX history from undergrad.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Completed undergrad degree after 10 years of off and on school and a major head injury. I think anything is possible.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I perform depression era/dustbowl songs in history classes. I also started a major project assessing our common reading program.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
It is important to commit do doing the work. There is no way to "skate through" and get anything out of my class. Also, I LOVE reading students' writing.
