What is your style of teaching?
Guided Discovery, friendly socratic exploration through lecture w/ Q
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Extensive use of video, photographs, charts, other compelling visualizations. Also audio clips/documentaries.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
Field work among various persons affected by HIV -- nonparticipant observation, interviewing, etc.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Critical thinking and its development over time in relation to the subject at hand.
What kind of student would love your class?
The kind who is open to new ways of thinking about old subjects/issues, the kind who isn't grade-grubbing, who cares more about exercising thought than a grade
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Question Everything.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
Being a father.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
Yes. I make documentary films and reality TV programs for NatGeo, TLC, Discovery, etc.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
If you dislike the profane, hate being challenged, live in the comfort of your own assumptions (and like it that way), then don't take my class.
