What is your style of teaching?
My class is very student-centered and discussion-based. I work with the students to construct knowledge instead of just giving them information.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
I use occasional short film clips. I use clips from The Daily Show frequently in my 101 and 102 classes and clips from movies in my literature classes.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
For my literature classes, the final essay asks students to compare a work of literature we have read with a movie.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
Mastery of the relevant skills for the assignment. The skills in my class are tied to being able to read closely and carefully and express yourself clearly.
What kind of student would love your class?
A student who finds lecture classes boring and prefers to learn by doing and interacting with other students and the instructor.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
To be active participants in their education and look for ways in which all of their classes, including those not in their major, can improve their learning.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
My specialties are Shakespeare and the teaching of writing.
