What is your style of teaching?
Discussion is the primary method with some lecture to create a frame of reference.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
I will often use the internet in class to demonstrate and add info as it comes up. I especially like TED and the use of online forums.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
A characterization exercise in which students inhabit the characters that they are writing about.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
I take a holistic view of student performance, including work on assignments, in the classroom, and with their peers.
What kind of student would love your class?
Students who want to be engaged with the discussion and the material and who see themselves, or want to see themselves, as writers or scholars.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Learning is a partnership, so be curious and active in your pursuit of understanding the concepts and content of the course.

Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I am currently working on a collection of short stories and a novel.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
I tend to have a relaxed atmosphere in my class; some students need and like a lot of structure, my courses tend shift, depending on what I see the needs are.
