What is your style of teaching?
1) My goal is to LISTEN. To teach you, I have to know where you are. 2) Like music or sports, you learn from reps. I give lots of work, in class and out.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
In stats class I use the computers as much as possible. All my classes have homework on Blackboard. I answer a lot of questions via email all semester long.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
My resources class makes a movie and a presentation. I try to get you folks some usable skills as well as knowledge so you can get a good job!
When grading a student, what do you look for?
On mathy material, I look for mastery: familiarity with the material and the ability to apply it. In resources class, I seek solid analysis and presentation.
What kind of student would love your class?
Someone who wants to learn and is willing to work, but who maybe wants an extra hand to help them along. I do my best to be there.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
In the immortal words of Ru Paul, "You better work!" Seeing hard work makes me happy, and I'll be with you. Bottom line on the test, though, is what you know!
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
I know something about environment, energy, health, and development policy.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
I use stats to help international aid organizations get the most for their money. Helping people out, albeit indirectly, makes me happy.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I am my church's representative at Habitat for Humanity and I volunteer there a few times a year. I love travel. I help out the Econ Society- check them out!
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
Someone on Rate My Professors says, "There are easier profs for stats." That's true. If you want to learn, and you want a prof who will help you out, take me.
