What is your style of teaching?
I have a casual, open, yet rigorous style, with high tolerance for individual quirks but strict rules on some things. I enjoy teaching.
What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
I use everything I can get. Here I use whiteboards, PowerPoint, a few video clips, handouts, the book, and lots of talking. I try to mix it up.
What is the most engaging assignment you give?
I try to provide some problems that are specific to current national or local events - not just generic problems taken out of the book.
When grading a student, what do you look for?
I look for accuracy and for a sense that the student has thought out the quiz and HW problems. Continuous improvement counts for a lot. Ask questions!
What kind of student would love your class?
My favorite kind of student thinks she hates Econ. I like to convert people! I enjoy inquisitive and even argumentative students. Confused students too.
What is one piece of advice you have for students?
Have an open mind, take it step by step, and ask for help if you get lost. Don't wait too long! Challenge the prof to keep it interesting.
What area in your field are you most knowledgeable about?
My strengths are in environmental regulation and government in general. Land use and property rights (such as water rights) are of great interest to me.
What is one accomplishment you are proud of?
I was part of a citizen team that led the successful fight for the override of a tax cap law in order to provide more funds for K-12 education in a major city.
Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I am a high-level college administrator who regularly teaches one course/semester. I'm in charge of Commencement and course evals, and research grants.
Is there anything else the student should know before taking your class?
I believe the professor's job is to teach the material in a way that students can understand it. I do expect the student to be a partner in this enterprise.
