I watch a lot of television and spend too much time on Twitter (@daniellestern), from which I generate plenty of current discussion topics for class.

When grading a student, what do you look for?
I look for motivation and improvement over the course of the term. Eye contact and participating in class discussions are important, so is completing readings.

What materials and media do you use in the classroom?
Wordpress, YouTube, Twitter, Prezi, Coursekit, Google Docs and so on. I try to get away from Blackboard and PowerPoint as much as possible.

Are you currently involved in something interesting outside the classroom?
I'm helping with an oral history project about LGBTQ Hampton Roads. I also serve on the editorial board for AltDaily, an alternative/activist online news site.

For individual learning, a reflection essay on media engagement; for group learning, a blog activity with multimedia components.

What is your style of teaching?
I encourage interactive course discussion and seminar approaches. The only exception is the occasional large lecture section of COMM 250.
